THE DOUBLE PORTION “Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied. (2 Kings 2:9) The spirit of Elijah is resting on Elisha. (2 Kings 2:15) Why did Elisha ask for a “double portion” of Elijah’s spirit? The answer lies in the inheritance laws of the Old Testament. According to Deuteronomy 21:17, the firstborn son was entitled to a “double share” of the father’s possessions. Although Elisha was not literally Elijah’s son, he was truly his “firstborn” heir in terms of spiritual power.
